Travel and Entertainment (T&E) Merchant

A T&E merchant is a business classified in the travel and entertainment sector, such as a hotel or car rental company. The label can affect card-processing classification, but it does not set one universal fee.

Also called: T&E merchant

What a T&E merchant is

T&E stands for travel and entertainment. In payment processing, it describes a merchant whose business activity falls into the travel or entertainment sector. Hotels, airlines, car rental companies, and travel agencies are common examples. The label describes the merchant’s business, not a particular card or payment method.

A T&E merchant is also different from a T&E card. A T&E card is a commercial card employees use for business expenses such as travel. Your business can accept those cards without being classified as a T&E merchant, and a travel business can accept many kinds of cards. See .

T&E describes your business category, not a universal card fee.

How classification affects your costs

Card processors use a four-digit to identify a merchant’s predominant business activity. Your acquirer assigns the code when setting up your account. The MCC helps determine which card-processing categories apply to your transactions.

The T&E label does not create a standard surcharge or fixed T&E processing rate. Card costs still have three parts: interchange paid to the issuing bank, network fees, and processor markup. The MCC can affect interchange treatment, while only the processor markup is negotiable. There is no single T&E rate that applies to every hotel, airline, or travel agency.

Travel businesses face a particular operating risk: cancellations caused by weather or political disruption can lead to disputes and uneven cash flow. That does not make every travel merchant a high-risk account. If a provider classifies your business as high risk, compare the quoted setup, monthly, and transaction charges, along with any reserve terms and settlement delays, before accepting the account.

Where it appears on your statement

Your statement may not use the words “T&E merchant.” Look for an MCC in your account profile or onboarding records, and compare it with your business’s main activity. A four-digit code that describes a different business type can put transactions into an unsuitable processing category.

Do not treat a separate line labeled “T&E fee” as a universal network charge. Ask what service or pricing term that line represents, then compare it with your contract and monthly processing totals. On a tiered statement, the effect of your MCC can be buried inside the rate rather than shown as a distinct interchange line.

What you can actually change

  1. Verify your MCC. Find the four-digit code in your processor account profile or onboarding records. Confirm that it describes your business’s predominant activity.
  2. Question unexplained charges. Ask for the service or contract term behind any line labeled “T&E fee.” Compare that charge with your monthly statement totals and pricing terms.
  3. Compare risk terms. If an account offer calls your business high risk, compare setup, monthly, and transaction charges, reserve terms, and settlement timing before signing.

Frequently asked questions

Does being a T&E merchant mean I pay a special processing fee?

No universal T&E fee applies to every merchant in the category. Your MCC can affect the interchange categories used for transactions, while your total cost also includes network fees and processor markup. Review the actual rates and charges on your statement.

Is a T&E merchant the same as a business that accepts T&E cards?

No. A T&E merchant is classified by its business activity, while a T&E card is a commercial card used for employee expenses such as travel. A business can accept T&E cards without being a travel or entertainment merchant.

How do I find out whether my business is classified as T&E?

Look for your four-digit MCC in your processor account profile or onboarding records. Compare its description with your business’s predominant activity, then request a correction if the code does not fit.
