T&E Card

A T&E card is a business payment card for employee travel and entertainment expenses. For your business, the key point is that the card’s commercial category, not its T&E label, can affect processing costs.

Also called: Travel and Entertainment Card, Travel & Entertainment Card, T&E corporate card, Travel and expense card

What a T&E card is

A T&E card is a payment card a company gives employees for approved business travel and entertainment expenses. Purchases can include airfare, hotels, meals, ground transportation, and event costs. Employers use the program to track spending, enforce expense policies, and collect transaction details for reporting.

The term describes the card’s business purpose, not one universal card product. A T&E card may be issued as a corporate or commercial card, and billing can go to each employee or to one central company account. Some programs include employee spending limits, merchant restrictions, or expense-reporting tools. The employer and card issuer set the program’s controls.

T&E describes why an employee uses the card. Its commercial card category is what can affect your interchange cost.

What it means for your processing costs

If you accept a T&E card, the transaction is processed through its card network like other card purchases. The card’s commercial classification can place it in a different interchange category from a consumer card. Commercial card categories commonly cost merchants more, but the T&E label alone does not determine a rate or guarantee a specific fee.

Your card-processing bill still has three layers: interchange, network fees, and processor markup. Only the markup is negotiable. The card network, card type, transaction details, and data submitted help determine the interchange category. A T&E card does not create a separate, standard merchant fee simply because the purchase is for travel or entertainment.

There is no universal T&E fee or standard statement line that identifies every such purchase. Your statement may show interchange categories or card-type descriptions, depending on your pricing and processor. Compare the effective costs of commercial-card transactions with consumer-card transactions, and look for category downgrades or added processor markup.

What the card controls do

For your customer, a T&E card is a company-approved way to pay. The employer may limit spending by employee, transaction, department, or merchant type. Those controls are designed to manage the company’s expenses. They do not set your acceptance fees or change the processing rules for your business.

For a business that issues T&E cards to its own employees, central billing and transaction-level reports can help allocate expenses and reconcile purchases. Those are expense-management benefits, separate from the card fees you pay when customers use commercial cards at your checkout.

What you can actually change

  1. Separate card categories. Compare the processing cost of commercial-card transactions with consumer cards. Review the interchange detail on your statement rather than treating every business card as one rate.
  2. Check your markup. Separate interchange and network fees from your processor’s markup. The markup is the part you can negotiate.
  3. Review transaction data. Check how your processor classifies commercial-card sales and whether transaction details are submitted correctly. Look for downgraded transactions and added fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is a T&E card the same as a corporate card?

T&E cards are commonly issued as corporate or commercial cards, but the terms are not identical. T&E describes the card’s intended use for business travel and entertainment. Corporate card describes the business card program or account.

Do T&E cards cost merchants more to accept?

They can cost more when the card is classified in a commercial interchange category, which commonly has higher costs than consumer-card categories. The T&E label itself does not set a fee. Your card type, network, and transaction data determine the applicable category.

Can I negotiate the interchange rate on a T&E card?

You cannot negotiate the interchange rate itself. You can review whether transactions are classified correctly and negotiate your processor markup, which is separate from interchange and network fees.

Will my statement show a T&E card fee?

There is no universal statement line for T&E cards. Your statement may itemize interchange by category or show card-type descriptions, depending on your pricing setup. Compare commercial-card costs with consumer-card costs in the detailed fee section.
