Visa BIN Attribute Sharing Service (VBASS)

VBASS gives eligible businesses access to Visa card details such as funding source, issuer country and product type. It supports checkout and risk decisions, but it is not a transaction fee or a way to lower card-processing rates.

Also called: VBASS, Visa BIN Attribute Sharing

What VBASS is

A BIN, or Bank Identification Number, identifies the issuer and other details associated with a payment card. Visa BINs are 6 to 8 digits long. VBASS is an optional Visa service that shares attributes about Visa BINs and account ranges, such as whether the card is credit, debit or prepaid, the issuer country, and whether the product is consumer or commercial.

The service provides information for business processes, not a new payment method. Depending on access level, data can also identify product details, card or token type, and indicators relevant to commercial cards. You use those attributes in systems that support checkout, payment operations or risk decisions.

VBASS can improve how your systems handle Visa cards, but it is not a card-processing fee or a rate-reduction tool.

How access works

You can receive VBASS data directly through Visa APIs or indirectly through an acquirer or an acquirer-sponsored third party. Available tools include full BIN data files and a lookup for a BIN, account range, card number or token. Visa requires sponsorship and, in most cases, a business justification for participation.

The attributes can help your systems distinguish card products and issuer details before or during checkout. For example, funding-source information can help you apply the right checkout logic for credit, debit or prepaid cards. Visa recommends refreshing data daily or weekly, and at least once every two weeks, so your tables do not rely on stale BIN information.

What it means for your costs and risk

VBASS is not an interchange rate, network assessment or processor markup, and it does not add a per-transaction card fee. Visa’s developer documentation lists Basic access as having no program fee. Enhanced access requires registration and Visa approval, and is subject to pricing. Applicable onboarding fees can still apply to Basic access.

Accurate attributes can help prevent operational mistakes, such as applying the wrong checkout treatment based on a card’s funding source or issuer details. Visa warns that inaccurate third-party BIN data can contribute to unnecessary declines and payment-operation problems. In Visa’s analysis of one leading third-party database, 32% of the analyzed attribute data matched Visa’s data. The documentation does not specify a VBASS fee amount or a statement line name.

Why eight-digit BINs matter

Visa clients, including acquirers and processors, were required to support 8-digit issuing BINs effective April 2022. Systems built around the first 6 digits can misidentify a card as issuers use longer BINs. That can affect routing, card benefits, cash-back eligibility and point-of-sale reporting. VBASS is one way to obtain current Visa BIN attributes, but it does not replace reviewing your own payment-system logic.

What you can actually change

  1. Audit BIN logic. Find systems that classify cards using only the first 6 digits, including checkout, routing, loyalty and point-of-sale reporting. Confirm they handle 8-digit BINs.
  2. Compare access costs. Basic access has no program fee, while Enhanced access is subject to pricing and onboarding fees can apply. Get the access level and any charges in writing before implementation.
  3. Refresh your data. If you use BIN tables, set a refresh schedule no longer than two weeks. Visa recommends daily or weekly updates for current attributes.
  4. Protect card data. If your setup uses full card numbers or exposes more than the first 6 digits, review the data flow and safeguards with your security team. The VBASS lookup requires PCI DSS compliance and message-level encryption.

Frequently asked questions

Does VBASS reduce my credit card processing fees?

No. VBASS shares card attributes for checkout and payment operations. It does not change interchange, network assessments or your processor markup, and Visa’s documentation does not describe it as a transaction-fee reduction service.

How much does VBASS cost?

Visa lists Basic access as having no program fee. Enhanced access requires registration and Visa approval and is subject to pricing. Applicable onboarding fees can also apply, and Visa’s public documentation does not list specific fee amounts.

Can my business sign up for VBASS directly?

Merchants are eligible, but Visa requires acquirer or issuer sponsorship for registration in most cases. A sponsor-approved third party can also register or provide attributes to your business. Basic access has a separate no-program-fee option with its own onboarding terms.

What information does VBASS provide?

Attributes can include funding source, product platform, issuer name and country, product details, and card or token type. The information available depends on your approved access level and the lookup or data service you use.
