What STAR Network is
STAR is a specific U.S. debit payment network. It connects debit transactions across participating financial institutions and merchants, supporting purchases and payments through point-of-sale systems, e-commerce, ATMs and digital wallets.
STAR supports PIN, PINless, signature, ATM, bill payment and tokenized transactions. The network serves more than 115 million debit cardholders from over 2,800 issuers, including 24 of the top 50 U.S. issuers.
STAR is a debit network brand, not a price guarantee; compare your actual debit costs and routing options.
How STAR relates to debit networks
"Debit network" is the general category; STAR is one network brand within it. Other U.S. debit network brands include Accel, NYCE and Pulse. A STAR logo on a debit card or acceptance materials identifies STAR, not every network that can process that card.
Federal Regulation II requires at least two unaffiliated networks on every debit card. That rule creates network choice for routing, but the STAR name alone does not show which network handled a particular sale or whether your setup uses the lowest-cost available route.
What STAR means for your costs
The STAR brand alone does not establish your processing rate or prove that a transaction costs less. STAR's service information does not provide a merchant fee schedule, so do not assume a STAR-branded debit card carries a special discount or a fixed STAR fee.
Your statement might not display a clear line labeled STAR. Compare total debit costs and any separately itemized network charges against your transaction volume and pricing plan. A STAR logo tells you about network acceptance, not the amount your processor charges.
What you can actually change
You do not set STAR's network rules or fees. You can check whether your debit acceptance setup supports STAR and compare the routing and pricing choices your processor makes available.
- Confirm your terminals, online checkout and digital-wallet acceptance support STAR debit transactions.
- Compare debit processing costs across statements instead of treating the STAR logo as a price indicator.
- Ask for the available debit routing options and compare their costs before changing settings.
- Track debit approvals and completed sales after a routing change to spot service effects.
Frequently asked questions
Is STAR Network a debit card?
No. STAR is a debit payment network that processes transactions; a debit card is the payment card a customer uses. A card can support more than one debit network.
Does STAR Network charge merchants a specific fee?
The STAR service information does not set out a merchant fee schedule or a standard STAR-specific amount. The STAR name alone does not tell you what a transaction costs, so compare the debit charges on your statement and your processing terms.
Is STAR Network the same as a debit network?
No. Debit network is the category, and STAR is one network brand in that category. STAR supports debit payments across channels including point of sale, e-commerce, ATMs and digital wallets.
