Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR)

Rapid Dispute Resolution (RDR) uses rules you set to refund eligible Visa transactions before they enter formal chargeback processing. It can reduce dispute work, but an automatic refund means you give up the sale.

Also called: Verifi RDR

What Rapid Dispute Resolution is

Rapid Dispute Resolution is a Visa pre-dispute service operated through Visa Resolve Online (VROL). When a cardholder disputes an eligible Visa transaction, RDR checks it against rules configured for your business. If it qualifies, the transaction is credited to the cardholder before it proceeds through formal dispute processing.

RDR is for Visa transactions, not Mastercard or bank payments. The service was incorporated into VROL in 2021. Visa says an RDR-resolved transaction must not be treated as a dispute, counted in your dispute ratio, or billed as a dispute in processing systems.

RDR can remove an eligible Visa dispute from your dispute count, but the refund still costs you the sale.

How it works

You define which disputes to resolve with a refund, using criteria such as dispute type or transaction value. For example, a rule could refund lower-value fraud disputes while sending larger transactions through your normal review process. Once a case meets the rule, the credit is issued automatically, so your team does not prepare a representment for that case.

RDR is a resolution choice, not a finding that the cardholder is right. A refund gives up the sale even when you might have successfully challenged the dispute. Set limits that reflect your average ticket and the evidence you have, especially if a single refund would materially affect your revenue.

What it means for your costs

An RDR refund returns the transaction amount to the customer. Some integrations also charge a fee per resolved dispute, but the research available does not establish a standard fee or who invoices it. Compare any RDR fee with the dispute fee and staff time you would otherwise pay, and include the refunded sale in your cost calculation.

Keeping resolved cases out of dispute counts can help protect your dispute metrics. Visa requires RDR cases to be separated from dispute transactions in reporting and billing, so confirm your processor's reports do not count them as chargebacks or charge a dispute-received fee for them.

Where to check your records

RDR does not have a single statement line name established in the available documentation. Check your processor's dispute and refund reports instead: match RDR-resolved cases to the original sale, the credit, any RDR fee, and your dispute totals. In VROL, an RDR financial ID begins with the letter “m,” which helps distinguish the case from a formal dispute.

What you can actually change

  1. Set refund limits. Use transaction value and dispute type to define which cases get an automatic refund. Set tighter limits for high-ticket sales where a refund is costly.
  2. Price the full tradeoff. Compare the refund amount and any RDR fee with the dispute fee, staff time, and risk of a chargeback. Do not treat avoided dispute fees as the only savings.
  3. Reconcile the reports. Match each RDR credit to its original sale and check that resolved cases are excluded from dispute counts and dispute-fee billing.

Frequently asked questions

Does Rapid Dispute Resolution apply to Mastercard?

No. RDR applies to Visa transactions. It does not resolve Mastercard disputes or bank-payment disputes.

Does RDR stop a chargeback?

For an eligible case resolved through RDR, the credit is issued before formal dispute processing, so the case does not proceed as a chargeback. Cases that do not meet your rules continue through the standard dispute process.

Does RDR cost money?

Some integrations charge a fee per RDR-resolved dispute. There is no standard fee amount established in the available documentation, so compare the fee shown in your pricing or billing records with the dispute costs it replaces.

Do RDR cases count toward my dispute ratio?

Visa says RDR-resolved transactions must not be counted or classified as disputes in merchant dispute ratios. Check your reports to confirm the cases are excluded and that any related fees are identified separately.
