Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE)

Point-to-point encryption protects payment-card data from capture in your payment device to a secure decryption environment. A PCI-listed solution can reduce the PCI DSS requirements that apply to your business, but it does not remove your security responsibilities.

Also called: P2PE, PCI-listed Point-to-Point Encryption, PCI-validated P2PE

What P2PE is

Point-to-Point Encryption (P2PE) encrypts payment account data inside a payment device when you accept a card. The data stays encrypted while it passes through your point-of-sale system and network, then reaches a secure environment where the solution provider decrypts it for processing.

The distinction that matters is whether the full solution is listed by the PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). A listed solution has been assessed against the P2PE standard. Encryption alone does not make a product PCI-listed P2PE or qualify your business for the same PCI DSS scope reduction.

P2PE can shrink your PCI DSS scope, but only when you use and manage a PCI-listed solution correctly.

How it works

A P2PE payment device encrypts card data at capture. It sends encrypted data through your payment system, but does not decrypt it there. The provider decrypts the data inside its secure environment, so your business systems do not handle it in readable form when the validated solution is implemented correctly.

This reduces the amount of readable card data exposed if someone accesses your systems. It does not stop someone from stealing or tampering with a physical terminal, so staff still need to inspect devices and report anything unusual.

What P2PE changes for PCI compliance

Using a PCI-listed P2PE solution reduces the PCI DSS requirements that apply to your business. That can simplify the work of documenting and validating compliance. You still have obligations, and the exact validation process depends on the payment brands’ rules for your business.

Follow the solution’s P2PE Instruction Manual. Keep a current device inventory, apply required updates, and train staff to spot tampering and report it. If you use encryption that is not part of a listed and correctly implemented solution, do not assume it reduces your PCI DSS scope.

What it means for your costs and risk

P2PE does not change interchange, network assessments, or your processor’s markup. There is no standard P2PE price or required statement line name in the available guidance, so compare any terminal, encryption, or security-service charge with the amount in your agreement.

The main financial benefit is risk reduction, not a lower processing rate. If payment data is stolen while encrypted, it is less useful to an attacker. P2PE does not eliminate PCI DSS obligations, physical-device risks, or every possible consequence of a breach.

What you can actually change

  1. Verify the listing. Find the exact solution and devices in the PCI SSC P2PE listing. Encryption by itself does not establish that your solution is validated.
  2. Get the instruction manual. Use the solution’s P2PE Instruction Manual to identify device, staff, and recordkeeping duties. Assign someone to maintain the device inventory and report tampering.
  3. Review security charges. Compare terminal, encryption, and security-service charges on your statement with the amounts in your agreement. P2PE does not lower interchange or network fees.

Frequently asked questions

Does P2PE make my business PCI compliant?

No. A PCI-listed P2PE solution reduces the PCI DSS requirements that apply, but your business still has compliance duties. You must use the validated solution correctly and follow its P2PE Instruction Manual.

Does P2PE lower credit card processing fees?

P2PE does not change interchange, network assessments, or processor markup. A provider may charge for terminals or security services, so compare those charges with your agreement and statement.

Is any encrypted payment terminal considered P2PE?

No. For P2PE scope-reduction benefits, use a solution listed by the PCI Security Standards Council and implement it as specified. Encryption that is not part of a listed solution does not automatically provide those benefits.
