Also called: Visa Order Insight, Visa Merchant Purchase Inquiry (VMPI)
What Order Insight is
Order Insight is a Visa dispute-prevention service that shares transaction details with a participating cardholder’s bank when the customer questions a purchase. The issuer can show those details in its banking app or use them to explain the charge during a customer-service call. The service was previously known as Visa Merchant Purchase Inquiry, or VMPI.
The goal is to help a customer recognize a real purchase before filing a chargeback. That matters when your billing descriptor is unfamiliar, a subscription renewal is forgotten, or a customer does not remember an online order. Order Insight addresses confusion about genuine transactions, not fraud from a stolen card.
Order Insight can clarify a Visa purchase before a chargeback, but issuer participation and clear order data determine its reach.
How Order Insight works
When a customer contacts a participating issuer about a Visa transaction, the issuer requests more information. Order Insight passes relevant merchant and order details, such as the business name, order date, amount, product information, and customer contact details, so the issuer can present a clearer picture of the purchase.
The issuer and cardholder decide what happens next. Order Insight does not decide whether a transaction is valid, issue a refund, or guarantee that a dispute will be stopped. The service works at the inquiry stage. If the customer proceeds with a formal dispute, you still need to handle the resulting chargeback through the normal process.
What it means for your business
A dispute that is resolved before filing avoids the work and potential costs tied to a chargeback, including staff time, lost sale revenue, and a chargeback fee. Order Insight does not reduce interchange, network assessments, or your processor markup, and the research does not state a standard Order Insight fee. Treat it as a dispute-management tool, not a processing-rate discount.
Published results for October 2023 through September 2024 report that merchants deflected an average of 40% to 45% of confirmed first-party-misuse disputes. Some subscription merchants reported results as high as 90%. Those figures describe reported outcomes, not a promise for your business. Your results depend on factors such as issuer participation and the quality of the order details you provide.
What to check before relying on it
Order Insight applies to Visa purchases, and the customer’s issuer must participate for the details to reach the customer. You cannot make every bank display your data. It also does not cover Mastercard transactions, so review your card mix before treating it as a broad dispute solution.
Send details that help a customer identify the specific purchase, including a recognizable business name, accurate order information, and relevant product or subscription terms. Review your dispute records to see whether confusion about your descriptor, renewals, or order fulfillment is driving chargebacks. A chargeback alert service handles a different point in the process, after a dispute is filed or a notification is generated.
What you can actually change
- Check your Visa mix. Compare Visa transactions with your total sales and chargebacks. Order Insight does not address disputes on other card networks.
- Improve order details. Use a recognizable billing name and keep accurate order, product, and subscription information available to return when an issuer asks.
- Measure actual results. Track inquiries, disputes that proceed to chargeback, and outcomes separately. Compare those figures before and after activation rather than assuming every inquiry was prevented.
Frequently asked questions
Is Order Insight only for Visa transactions?
Yes. Order Insight addresses Visa transactions. It does not cover Mastercard purchases, and a participating issuer must be involved for the customer to receive the transaction details.
Does Order Insight stop every chargeback?
No. It gives the issuer and customer more information before a formal dispute is filed, but it does not decide the dispute or guarantee the customer will drop it. If a chargeback is filed, you still need to respond through the regular process.
Does Order Insight lower my processing fees?
It does not change interchange, network assessments, or your processor markup. Preventing a chargeback can avoid related costs and staff work, but the research does not establish a standard Order Insight fee.
What information should my business provide?
Useful details include your business name, order date and amount, product or service information, and customer contact details. Accurate information that helps the cardholder recognize the specific purchase gives the issuer more context.
