Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI)
An Originating Depository Financial Institution (ODFI) is a financial institution authorized to initiate electronic payments on behalf of its customers via the Automated Clearing House (ACH) network. This type of institution plays a crucial role in the ACH network by serving as the entry point for electronic payment transactions, such as direct deposits, payroll payments, and bill payments.
The ODFI is responsible for ensuring that all electronic transactions it initiates comply with the regulations set forth by the ACH network and that they are properly authorized by the customers initiating them. This involves collecting and processing transaction data from its customers, formatting this data according to ACH standards, and then transmitting the transactions to the ACH network for further processing.
